Elina Svitolina (28 years old, 76 WTA) was eliminated in the semifinals of Wimbledon after losing (3-6, 3-6) to Marketa Vondrousova (24 years old, 42 WTA).
The athlete from Ukraine became nervous at the press conference when she again spoke about the situation in her native country. Svitolina could not hold back tears and burst into tears in front of journalists.
“I definitely felt the strength of the people of Ukraine after the results of Wimbledon. I got a lot of messages from different people. It’s incredible how they were with me here and I hope they continue. I’m very glad that the match was live in Ukraine because I know it took a few years for that to happen to the people there.
I think it is very important for children to watch tennis as well as other sports. It is important that there is something else in their life so that they can follow their dreams. When I was little, my parents would buy me matches of the biggest champions to watch and try to copy something from them, learn something from them. I imagined myself playing in the great arenas of the world.
I am very glad that this is finally happening, and together with my foundation we are fighting to give this opportunity to the people and children of Ukraine. I am happy about this,” said Elina Svitolina.
