Marketa Vondrousova, the first finalist of Wimbledon-2023 – victory with Elina Svitolina

The beginning of the match was safe for Elina and Marketa. They were inseparable until 2-2, after which the player from the Czech Republic took the first break in the semi-finals.

This was only the beginning, two more games followed in a row, in which the athletes at the reception came out victorious. After a series of three breaks, the scoreboard is 4:3 in favor of Vondrousova.

A finalist at Roland Garros in 2019, Marketa was more inspired and confident at the end of the set, pulling back to 5-3 before closing out the set with another return game (6-3).

With high confidence, Marketa continued to be the “first violin” of the game: the variety of the game, successful decisions in crisis situations, special intuition, and the table was on the side of the athlete from the Czech Republic.

Vondrousova once again prevailed on serve, and thanks to safe games from the shot, she broke away to 3-0 in the second set.

Svitolina looked like she was running out of energy at times, and she was also uninspiring in some situations where she was in clear positions to close out the points.

The crowd was more on Elina’s side, but unfortunately even the cheers from the fans didn’t help Svitolina on a day when she was still far from what she showed at this year’s Wimbledon.

On the other hand, Marketa ran incredibly, used a slice, short, and even did not hesitate to lob her opponent when the situation allowed.

Vondrousova was clearly more patient, building her points around her left forehand and drawing angles that constantly troubled Elina on her backhand.

The fourth game of the second set was the one in which Svitolina lost many hopes for a comeback: there were many turns in the Ukrainian’s serve, but in the end Vondrousova still won – 4:0.

A fighter by definition, Elina did not give up even at 0-1 in sets and 0-4. Realizing that she had nothing more to lose, Svitolina began to let go.

Step by step, Elina staged a comeback, which at a certain moment could have seemed impossible: from 0-4, the Ukrainian came to 3-4 and served, eliminating the advantage of two breaks of her opponent.

A big cost mentally, but especially physically, took its toll, and Svitolina made a new poor serving series.

Being in an obvious loss of positions, Marketa scored with a rematch, and the scoreboard was 5-3 in her favor.

Vondrousova did not let the situation out of her control and ended the match with her serve: 6-3 after the semifinal, which lasted an hour and 14 minutes.
