The match between Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka at Wimbledon ended with boos from the crowd after the two players did not shake hands at the end of the argument. These episodes have become frequent in recent months, and the WTA has provided the first clarification.

The WTA officially announced that there will be no handshakes between players from Ukraine and Russia and Belarus

Having been defeated by Svitolina in the 1/8 finals of the All England Club with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-7(9), Azarenka did not approach her opponent to shake her hand, as it is known that athletes from Ukraine no longer greet them those of Russia and Belarus since the beginning of the war in the neighboring country.

Vika was booed by spectators on Court 1 at Wimbledon, and after this new episode ended in scandal, the WTA offered a clear response.

In light of the new events, the WTA issued a press release in which it finally clarified that there will be no handshakes between players from Ukraine and Russia/Belarus at the end of the matches.

Hopefully this announcement will go some way to avoiding the booing that players receive at the end of duels that don’t involve handshakes.
