The race was marked by the withdrawal of Mark Cavendish, who will retire from cycling at the end of this season. The Briton, who won 34 stages on the Great Loop (a record he shared with Belgian Eddy Merckx), fell with 64 kilometers to go and damaged his left collarbone.
