​The recently concluded season was one of the surprises in terms of names that left the elite championships of European football. Teams that used to become champions have now tasted the bitter cup of relegation from the first echelon. Below, Betano presents the history of the eight former champions who were relegated at the end of the recently concluded season, as well as the top five antepost odds for each individual championship.

Three teams have left the English Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season, and two of them are former winners of European football’s most coveted title. In addition to the “saints” from Southampton, they were relegated from the Premier League Leicester City and Leeds United. Leicester’s relegation came as a huge surprise as the Foxes had celebrated winning the title just seven seasons earlier. Leeds, champions of England in 1969, 1974 and 1992, return to the Championship after just two seasons spent in a draw at Albion’s top flight. Two other former champions, Nottingham Forest (1 title) and Everton (9 titles), narrowly avoided relegation.

As for next season’s title race, Manchester City start as heavy favorites to win a fourth consecutive title after this year’s historic treble.

Series A

Napoli won their first Italian title after a 33-year wait, but relegation saw the two former champions say goodbye to Serie A for the time being. Hellas Veronachampion of 1985, and Sampdoria Genoa, the 1991 title holder, went down to the second tier along with Cremonese. In the case of “Sampdoria” it is even about departure from the “red light”.

Champions League finalists Inter Milan are considered the main favorites to win next season’s Serie A, while Napoli are the main contenders to defend their title.

Bundesliga

The battle for the title in Germany was fought between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund until the last second of the season. The Bavarians pulled off a miracle by clinching the title en route to Dortmund, but even in the relegation zone there was no slight tension. Ex-champions “Schalke-04” (seven titles to their credit) and “Hertha” Berlin (two-time champion of Germany) went to the second level. VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen, the teams that together won nine titles in history, also remained in the first league with great emotions.

For the upcoming season, the cards are drawn according to the same scenario as in recent years, the fight for the title will unfold between Bayern Munich and the rest of the world. From 2013 to today, Bayern have collected no less than 11 titles in a row. The last German champion outside of Bavaria was Borussia Dortmund in 2012.

France

No less than four teams were directly relegated from the first division of France, and Auxerre was among them. Champions of the Hexagon in 1996, Auxerre returns to Ligue 2 after just one season in the first division. Ajaccio, Troyes and Angers were also relegated from the first French league. Former champions Strasbourg were saved from relegation after a 1-1 home draw with already champions PSG in the penultimate stage of the season. FC Nantes Canaries, a team with 8 titles in history, remained in the first league, fighting until the last stage.

In the coming season, PSG remains the favorite for a new title. For the capital team, he would become the 12th in history.

Romania

At the end of the season, three teams were relegated from the Romanian first league, among them FC Arges, champions in 1972 and 1979. “Pitesti” team played a double playoff match with “Dynamo” Bucharest, the match was decided after the 6th match. 1 victory won by the “alb-reds” in the match of the tour at the National Arena. Despite losing the title after five years of hegemony, CFR Cluj is the main favorite along with FCSB in the new season. The new champion, Farul, is only fourth in the hierarchy of Betano’s chances to win the title.

Spain

Real Valladolid, Espanyol and Elche, teams that have never won the title, were relegated from La Liga. Valencia, the six-time Spanish champions, are left in a desperate situation in La Liga, one step away from relegation.

FC Barcelona won the title ahead of rivals Real Madrid, with the two top favorites to win the upcoming championship at odds of 2.00 on Betano.

They are followed by Atletico Madrid (10.00), Sevilla (50.00) and Villarreal (50.00).
