The 20-year-old Dane made a great start to lead 4-0, but Jacqueline fought back to make it 4-4 and Toson broke away to win the first set.

The second set brought more balance, with another 5-5 tie, but again this time the end belonged to Clara Toson, who managed to qualify for the second round.

Jacqueline Christian was the only Romanian present in the main draw in Valencia.

The BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia is part of the WTA 125 category, is played on clay and offers a total prize pool of $115,000. China’s Qinwen Zheng is the titular champion.
