Beatrice Haddad Maia has reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, with the Brazilian defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo in the longest match of the 2023 WTA tournament.

Beatrice Haddad Maia, qualifying after a nearly four-hour match

Paris Grand Slam 14th seed Haddad Maia prevailed over the Spaniard after three hours and 51 minutes of play (3) 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Each set had an interesting story, with Beatrice leading 5-2 and 6-5 in the first set, but Sara came back and won the tie-break.

Sorribes Tormo had a great start to the second set and made two breaks (3-0), but the Brazilian won six games in a row.

Haddad Maia led 5-3 in the decider (a game in which he missed three match points) but needed extra time to win the match 7-5.

  • Haddad Maia will fight in the quarters with Ons Jaber (favourite 7).
  • Beatrice is used to long matches: she held the previous record this year (defeat after 3 hours 41 minutes to Angelina Kalinina – WTA Rome quarter) and was defeated after a similar match by Sorana Kirstea (3 hours 29 minutes – first round of WTA Dubai).
  • Beatriz Haddad Maia is the second Brazilian athlete to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament (in the open era), after Maria Bueno 55 years ago (Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open in 1968).

The Roland Garros tournament takes place from May 28 to June 11, has a total prize pool of 49.6 million euros, and is the 127th tournament. Iga Sviatek and Rafael Nadal (14-time winner in Paris) became the champions of the title.
