Gael Monfles lost before the match with Holger Roon at Roland Garros

Back on court in Indian Wells after months out due to medical issues, Monfils (ATP No. 394) defeated Sebastian Baez (ATP No. 42) in five sets.

The Argentine led in the decisive set with a score of 4:0, but Gael (36 years old) found the strength to fight back and won with a score of 7:5.

The Frenchman was due to meet Holger Rooney in the second round of the Grand Slam in Paris, but said at a press conference that he had to withdraw.

“There is a problem with my wrist that I cannot solve. Unfortunately, the doctor said that it is not recommended to play with such an injury” – Gael Monfils.

Under these conditions, Rune (favorite 6) goes to the third round and will play with the winner of the match between Italian Andrea Vavassori (148 ATP) and Argentine Gennaro Alberto Olivieri (231 ATP).

Former world number 6 (November 2016), Monfils recently said he would retire from tennis if he suffered another major injury.

The Roland Garros tournament takes place from May 28 to June 11, has a total prize pool of 49.6 million euros, and is the 127th tournament. Iga Sviatek and Rafael Nadal (14-time winner in Paris) became the champions of the title.
