Lesya Tsurenko defeated Barbora Krejcikova in the first round of Roland Garros, but the Ukrainian was sad at the press conference.
Lesya Tsurenko says that her hometown was bombed 16 times in May
Born in Volodymyrets, Lesya (66 WTA) explained to journalists why she is not happy, even though she defeated the winner of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris in 2021.
“If I have a displeased face, it’s because my city was bombed 16 times in May… Yesterday part of a rocket fell 100 meters from my house.
My face probably isn’t very happy just because of that. Not because I go into the locker room and spread hatred on someone” – Lesya Tsurenkoat the press conference.
Tsurenko (34) also talked about her compatriot Marta Kostyuk, who was booed by the audience after she refused to shake Aryna Sabalenko’s hand.
“As for Marta Kostyuk… I believe that a young and talented girl from a country that is currently at war does not deserve this. Yes, that’s my opinion” – Lesya Tsurenko.
Know:
- Lesya Tsurenko will play American Lauren Davis (52 WTA) in the next round.
- Before the start of the tournament in Paris, the Ukrainian appealed to her compatriots to beat athletes from Russia and Belarus as many times as possible.
The Roland Garros tournament takes place from May 28 to June 11, has a total prize pool of 49.6 million euros, and is the 127th tournament. Iga Sviatek and Rafael Nadal (14-time winner in Paris) became the champions of the title.
