​Ajax Amsterdam suffered a 3-1 defeat by Twente on Sunday in the final stage of the Eredivisie. After the match, Steven Berghuis punched an opponent fan while trying to protect his teammate.

Berghuis (Ajax) lost his temper after a Twente fan insulted and racially abused his team-mate Brian Brobby, according to a witness.

“I regret my gesture, I shouldn’t have done it. I’m used to it, but people think they can shout whatever they want. My reaction doesn’t solve anything. I understood that. It’s bad, I have an exemplary role as an Ajax player – Stephen Berghuis in the application.

Ajax Amsterdam (69 points) took third place in the Eredivisie, losing to Feyenoord (82) and PSV (75).
