
Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior will not be penalized for the red card he received in Sunday’s match against Valencia at the Mestalla, where he was (among other things) subjected to racist insults and harassment by some home team fans. Spanish Federation, late Tuesday evening.
“The Competition Committee of the Spanish Federation (RFEF) believes that the referee’s assessment of this particular disqualification was due to the omission of everything that happened in the game that influenced the decision of the referees,” the federation said in a statement.
“The fact that the referee did not have a complete picture of a key part of the events (including the racist attitude of the fans) led him to an arbitrary decision. And all because he could not correctly assess what happened.
The game was stopped for 10 minutes because the Brazilian striker pointed out the fans who showed racist behavior towards him. He was then involved in an altercation with Valencia players which resulted in him being sent off in the second half.
Vinicius will then be eligible to be used by Carlo Ancelotti in Wednesday’s match against Rayo Vallecano in round 36 of La Liga.
In addition, the RFEF announced late on Tuesday that Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium south stand would be partially closed for five matches, and the club was fined €45,000 for racially offensive Vinicius.
Seven people were arrested by Spanish police earlier Tuesday on charges of various hate crimes against Vinicius Jr., including racist slurs they allegedly shouted at the Brazilian during Sunday’s match.
“It is considered proven that during the aforementioned match, racist chants were heard against Vinicius. Valencia has been fined €45,000,” the RFEF competition committee said in a statement.
