According to the BBC, two horses, Chloe’s Dream and Freezing Point, died a few hours before the Louisville race, its 149th edition.

Earlier this week, trainer Saffy Joseph Jr. was suspended after two of his horses died.

“It is with great sadness that we report this tragic death. Churchill Downs is unwavering in its commitment to animal health and welfare,” race organizers said.

In addition to Parents Pride and Chasing Artie – both trained by Joseph Jr. – Wild on Ice, Take Charge Briana and Code of Kings died this week.

Animal rights group Peta announced that, given the number of deaths, it had called on Churchill Downs to close the track to implement stricter safety protocols.

Favorite Forte was among the horses to drop out of the race early on Saturday, leaving just 18 entries, the fewest since 2020.

Mage, ridden by the Venezuelan Javier Castellano and trained by Gustavo Delgado, beat Two Phil’s and Angel of Empire, who were among the pre-race favorites, according to News.ro.
