Khachanov, ranked 12th in the world, defeated his compatriot 7-6(8), 6-4 after an hour and 43 minutes of play.
Rublev (Caja Magica’s 5th favorite) lost his cool early in the second set. Andriy missed an easy shot near the goal (on which Khachanov made the only break in the match) and hit the floor racket.
In the quarters, Karen (10th seed) will meet the winner of the match between the Iberian Carlos Alcaraz (2 ATP, the main favorite) and the German Oleksandr Zverev (16 ATP / 13).

The ATP Mutua Madrid Open takes place from April 25 to May 7 on clay in the Caja Magica complex. It is in the ATP 1000 category, has a total prize money of 7,705,780 euros, and the titular champion is Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
