Vesuvius National Park authorities on Friday asked Napoli fans to abandon plans, real or not, to celebrate a possible Italian title by lighting smokestacks on top of the crater, an idea that is “impractical”, AFP reported.

In a statement, the park’s administration said it was “with great concern” to read that some Neapolitan fans want to organize a “simulation of the eruption of Vesuvius at the top of the crater, igniting tricolor fumes” if the club are crowned Italian champions on Sunday.

Napoli will win if they beat Salernitana at home, while their nearest rivals Lazio fail to beat Inter Milan.

The city of Naples, dominated by Mount Vesuvius, spent weeks celebrating what would be its first Scudetto (championship title) since Diego Maradona.

But defenders of the volcano wanted to warn fans: the park administration “considers this idea dangerous and impractical.”

The national park said it had sent a letter to public order authorities on Wednesday asking them to take “appropriate measures” to prevent encroachments on the protected area.

Park Commissioner Raffaele De Luca confirmed that no permit for the Vesuvius celebration has been and will not be issued.

“Vesuvius Crater is a fragile and inherently dangerous place,” he said, according to the statement.

“We all rejoice in the victory of the city of Naples, which brings honor to the region and will bring much joy to its citizens, but the celebration must be limited to what is allowed by the rules of civilized life,” he added.

Vesuvius is the only active volcano in continental Europe. Its eruption in AD 79 destroyed the city of Pompeii, covering the entire territory with volcanic ash.
