Returning from an injury at the ATP Miami that saw him miss the Monte Carlo tournament, the former world number one made his debut on clay at the same event he won last year.
Only one hour and four minutes was needed for the main favorite to win two sets against Nuno Borges.
For Alcaraz, the tournament in Barcelona is the best training before Roland Garros, where he hopes to win the second Grand Slam tournament of his career.
In the 1/8 finals, the former world leader will meet the winner between Spaniards Roberto Bautista-Agut (25 ATP) and Bernabe Zapata Miralles (41 ATP).
The Barcelona Open will be held from April 15 to 23 and is part of the ATP 500 category. The total prize money is 2,661,825 euros, and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz became the title champion.
