Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, held a press conference on Monday in which he made it clear that the payments to former referee Negreira’s company were only for consultancy, leveling accusations against La Liga and Real Madrid officials.
Real Madrid accused by Barcelona of profitable arbitration proceedings
Laporta said the club’s internal investigation had concluded there was no wrongdoing and said the case was an organized campaign to discredit Barcelona, Reuters reported.
He accused La Liga president Javier Tebas of trying to damage FC Barcelona’s reputation.
In addition, Laporta was attacked by Real Madrid, who joined the prosecution’s case against FC Barcelona, saying that Real Madrid were always the favorites of the referees.
Joan Laporta said FC Barcelona sought technical advice from “someone with a lot of experience in football” in relation to Jose Maria Henriques Negreira.
“Counseling is not a violation or a crime.
“The Spanish tax department sent a letter to the prosecutor’s office saying it could not prove that payments to companies linked to Mr. Negreira influenced the outcome of any match,” Laporta said.
Joan Laporta asked UEFA to be honest with Barcelona in its own investigation, writes News.ro.
Last month, Spanish prosecutors accused FC Barcelona of paying €7.3 million between 2001 and 2018 to companies owned by Jose Maria Henriques Negreira. Negreira was vice-president of the Arbitration Commission of the Spanish Federation in the period 1993-2018.
