The Premier League has made arrangements for referees to stop matches featuring Muslim footballers during Ramadan so they can hydrate and recharge.
Matches in England suspended during Ramadan
As players of the Muslim faith do not eat or drink water during the month-long period of Ramadan, the Knights of the Whistle will be able to stop matches to allow them to drink water or various energy drinks and supplements after sunset, Reuters writes.
Referees were also encouraged to identify hungry players before the start of matches and agree on an approximate interval for stopping play.
Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah, Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante or Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez are just some of the footballers who will abstain from food and drink during the day starting on Wednesday.
In 2021, referee Graham Scott stopped a match between Leicester City and Crystal Palace after half an hour to allow Wesley Fofani and Cheikho Kouyate to stretch out after sunset.
