The legendary Martina Navratilova announced the news of the day in world sports: the owner of 18 Grand Slam titles announced that she had defeated cancer.
Martina Navratilova beat cancer
Navratilova, 66, admitted she was in remission after being diagnosed with throat and breast cancer earlier this year.
“As far as you know, I don’t have cancer. I should be able to go” – Martina Navratilovain an interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, The Guardian reports.
A winner of 167 tournaments throughout her career, Martina revealed what she went through after receiving the shocking news 13 years later following radiotherapy sessions for another breast cancer.
“I noticed that my left lymph node was enlarged and I thought it was because of the shingles shot I got a week ago. But then, after a few weeks, it wouldn’t go down, so I called the doctor.
I was in a complete panic for three days, thinking I might not make it to next Christmas. A list of all the things I wanted to do came to mind. And this might sound very superficial, but I thought, OK, what specific car would I really want to drive if I had another year to live? – Martina Navratilova.
Navratilova said the chemotherapy sessions were “by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
“It was the hardest because the first week I had chemotherapy and radiation at the same time. When you start to feel nauseous, you’re not sure if it’s from the chemotherapy or the protons.
I didn’t experience the proton until the third week, but then you get a sore mouth and a stuffy throat. Everything is swollen and very uncomfortable, and the proton is strangely drooling. You really don’t taste things the way you should.
Chemotherapy does the same thing to your throat, but then dries it out. So you get hit from all sides, and I don’t think the doctors are very good at telling you how it’s going to end.” – Martina Navratilova.
During her career, Martina Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles out of 167 tournaments she won.
She won 1442 games and lost 291 times. He collected $21,626,089 in tennis prize money alone, and first climbed to world number one on July 10, 1978.
