A stage that is very rarely seen on the football field took place in the match between Newport and Bradford City in the 36th round of League Two, the fourth tier of English football.
Midway through the first half, the home team kicked the ball into their own half and Harry Lewis (25), the Bradford keeper, came out to prevent the opposition’s attack and made a good save.
But a surprise! Lewis thought he was in the penalty area, but the ground in Newport is also used for Dragons RFC rugby matches and the line the keeper thought was a penalty was actually a rugby touch. Thus, Harry Lewis was about 20 meters from the goal line when he took possession of the ball.
The goalkeeper quickly passed the ball to a partner, but referee Sam Allison stopped the game. To the home side’s surprise, Harry Lewis only saw a yellow card, although the Newport crowd, especially manager Graham Coughlan, were clamoring for him to be sent off.
