No. 9 seed Belinda Bencic crashed out of the tournament in Indian Wells after a surprise three-set loss to compatriot Jill Teichmann.

Belinda Bencic eliminated Jill Teichmann in Indian Wells

The first set belonged to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, who won 6:3.

Jill Teichmann (WTA 39) made an impressive comeback and took full advantage of a five-service deficit against Bencic (WTA 9) to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3.

The game lasted 2 hours and 33 minutes.

The Swiss will fight for a place in the 1/8 finals in Indian Wells with the winner of the matches China’s Shuai Zhang (27 WTA) and Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson (103 WTA).

Indian Wells will be held from March 6-19 on hard and 96 players have started in the two main draws. The contest offers $8,800,000 each for men and women. Titled champions – Taylor Fritz and Iga Svyatek.
