John Isner and Gael Monfils are the most notable men’s first-round exits from the 2023 Indian Wells tournament.

John Isner and Gael Monfils were eliminated in the first round of Indian Wells

Isner (37 years old, ranked 39th in the world) was defeated by compatriot Brandon Nakashima (21 years old, 48 ATP), 7-6(7), 6-3. “Giant” John was a finalist in the 2012 California Desert Tournament. In the final action, he was defeated by Roger Federer with a score of 7-6(7), 6-3.

Things were not better for Gael Monfils (36 years old), the French clearly lost to the Australian Jordan Thompson (87 ATP), the score 6-3, 6-1.

Gael (210th in the world) has not played on the ATP circuit since August 2022.

Nikoloz Basilashvili, who took Novak Djokovic’s main-draw spot, exited the Indian Wells tournament in the first round after losing to Argentina’s Pedro Kachina 7-5, 6-3.

Indian Wells will be held from March 6-19 on hard and 96 players have started in the two main draws. The contest offers $8,800,000 each for men and women. Titled champions – Taylor Fritz and Iga Svyatek.
