ChFR Cluj is one step away from relegation from the European Cups due to non-payment of debts

Six clubs, including Olimpia Ljubljana and CFR Cluj, are facing a one-year ban from the next European competition, which they will qualify for until 2027, due to non-payment of debts. The probationary period in these cases is between one and two years, as clubs have financial targets to meet, UEFA said.

The club CFR Cluj was fined 250,000 euros for unpaid debts.

Olimpia have been fined €100,000, also for unpaid debts (wages, transfer fees or taxes. The more than 200 clubs that have qualified for this season’s three continental interclub competitions are being assessed over three different periods starting in July, UEFA said.

The Slovenian club has been fined for the second time for breaching Financial Fair Play since current UEFA president Aleksandar Ceferin left the group 12 years ago.

Olympia received 350,000 euros from UEFA for performances in the preliminary rounds of the European Conference League this season.

Croatian clubs Osijek and Rijeka, which had outstanding debts dating back to last season, which called into question their national federations’ licenses for the European Cups, were deprived of €450,000 in winnings, a reward for their performances in the European Conference League this season.

The other clubs, Aris Thessaloniki, Astana, Borac Banja Luka, Floriana, Konyaspor, Kyzylar SC Petropavlovsk, Osijek and Valmiera, were fined between 150,000 and 10,000 euros, according to Agerpres.

The CFR immediately reacted by publishing a press release in which it provides clarification after receiving the sanctions.

“The financial situation we are in today is speculative, and it is in this sense that the management of the club has for a long time made great efforts to compensate for the extravagance made in previous years.

We expected that there would be such difficult moments during the recovery process that began over a year ago, but we also knew that together we would always find a solution.

Thus, we have started an optimization plan, from which we will not deviate under any circumstances. In addition, we perceive this decision of the UEFA commission as an additional motivation to devote ourselves even more to financial recovery in such a way that we become an efficient and stable club from a financial point of view,” the club from Gruja said in a statement.
