The Association of Greek Gymnastic Sports Associations (SEGAS) has informed the European Athletics Federation that the Greek delegation will compete with the symbol of mourning at the European Indoor Championships starting tomorrow in Istanbul.

In the wake of the deadly Tempe train accident, members of the mission traveling to Turkey will compete with the symbol of mourning on their uniforms for those who died in the tragedy.

SEGAS expressed sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery and courage to those injured in the collision of two trains.

“The members of the Greek delegation who are in Istanbul for the Istanbul European Championship are shocked by the collision of two trains in the Tempe region, which claimed the lives of dozens of people,” SEGAS notes in its message.

“SEGAS has contacted the European Athletics Federation to inform them that the Greek team will be competing with the symbol of mourning to honor the memory of the victims. Thoughts of the athletes of Greece with the families and relatives of the dead, as well as the missing.

All domestic sporting events have been postponed for a period of three days of national mourning.

Deputy Sports Minister Lefteris Avgenakis announced the postponement of all national sporting events during the three days of national mourning declared by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“Immeasurable sorrow for the unspeakable tragedy in the Tempe Valley. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims. It goes without saying that all domestic sporting events are being postponed for three days of national mourning,” Mr. Avgenakis wrote in a Twitter post.

At the same time, the Organizing Committee of Cycling Greece announced the postponement of the presentation of the PPC Cycling Tour of Greece, which was supposed to take place tomorrow at noon.
