Tim, who used the protected ranking rule to play directly in the main draw of the ATP 500 competition, lost in three sets to Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (83 ATP), 6-1, 3-6, 7 -6(2).
In the next round, Monteiro will meet the winner of the match between Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo (107 ATP) and Britain’s Cameron Norrie (13 ATP, 2nd favorite).

Thiem is currently ranked 96th in the ATP rankings and has risen to third in the world in 2020.
Dominic has won just one match this season (against Alex Molkan in Buenos Aires), losing five.
Andriy Rublyov, Borna Gojo, Borna Coric, Juan Pablo Varillas and Thiago Monteiro beat Tim this year.
Tim has the most wins in the 2016 season (58 successes), and the most won tournaments in 2019 (Vienna, Beijing, Kitzbühel, Barcelona, Indian Wells).
During his career, Dominic Thiem won 17 ATP titles with 328 wins and 187 losses. He collected $29,384,966 from tennis prizes alone.

Lorenzo Musetti knocked out by Nicolas Jarry
The Italian Lorenzo Musetti (18 ATP, favorite 3) confidently defeated the Chilean Nicolas Jarry (139 ATP, came from the qualification), the score 6-4, 6-1.
Jarry (came from the qualification) will play in the 1/8 finals against the Iberian Pedro Martinez (76 ATP).

The Rio Open takes place from February 20 to 26 on clay, is part of the ATP 500 category and has a total prize pool of $2,178,980. The untitled champion and main favorite is Carlos Alcaraz.
