While in Qatar for the WTA 500 in Doha, Jessica Pegula spoke about her career highlights and why her game differs from that of world number one Iga Sviatek of Poland.
Admitted immediately to the 1/8 finals of the tournament in Doha, Jessica (WTA 4, favorite 2) will play the winner of the match between Madison Keys (WTA 23) and Jelena Ostapenko (WTA 14).
Jessica Pegula and comparison with Iga Svyatek: “I play hard and deep”
“I started playing at 5 or 6 and taking tennis lessons at 7. I grew up in Pennsylvania. I had great coaches who taught me good technique. I think I have a good hand when it comes to timing.
I’m not like Igu (Sviatek) or Koko (Gauf) sliding around the field, but my hand-eye coordination is pretty good. I play hard and deep, which makes many girls uncomfortable. It’s how I grew up, it’s my natural way of playing” – Jessica Pegulaquoted by PuntoDeBreak.

A turning point in his career
“Without a doubt I would say Australian Open 2021 when we got to the quarter-finals. This was one of my biggest results to date. After that we came to Doha and reached the quarter-finals or semi-finals. This tournament helped me a lot.
I’d say I’m a little late, but nowadays we see tennis players who “explode” later in their careers. Perhaps everyone’s game develops at different rates.
In the year of the pandemic, there were not many fans or people in general. I considered myself suitable. So I decided to go and compete. Perhaps it was not so easy for other girls due to the lack of fans and strict regulations. It was mentally exhausting. I decided I’m not going to complain, I’m going to use it to my advantage as much as I can” – Jessica Pegula.
Passion for writing
“Throughout my career, I wrote sporadically, sometimes more than others. I have always loved to write. I never seriously sat down at my desk knowing I was going to publish anything until the Australian Open 2021. One night, at 2am, I couldn’t sleep, I opened a document and wrote. It was really the first time I sat down and wrote something with a purpose. I think it’s very therapeutic.” – Jessica Pegula.
