Marseille and PSG, who occupy the first places in Ligue 1, will meet in a new episode of the French “classic”, this time in the round of 16 of the cup, in which they play one match for elimination.

The rivalry between OM and PSG has neither geographical nor sporting origins, but was settled in the early 1990s by the bosses of the two clubs after Bernard Tapie took charge of Marseille and Paris became the property of the Canal+ media group.

Marseille are second in the league with 46 points from 22 games, eight points behind leaders PSG, and suffered a shock Ligue 1 defeat 3-1 at home to Nice, their only loss in their last 11 games played in all competitions.

The team, coached by the Croatian Igor Tudor this season, advanced to the first round of the French Cup in Jerez (fourth division) on January 7 at home with a score of 2:0, and in the round of 16 of the French Cup they eliminated Rennes on January 20 with a score of 1: 0, also at home.

Ligue 1 leaders PSG, with 54 points from 22 games, moved eight points clear of chasers Marseille and Lance after winning 2-1 at home to Toulouse in the Championship.

Christophe Gaultier’s side reached this stage of the French Cup after beating Chateauroux (third division) in the first round 3-1 on January 6 and Pays de Cassel (sixth division) in the last 16 final miles, 7-0 on January 23 each time away.

Olympique Marseille has won the French Cup 10 times, the last in 1989, 4-3 in the final against Monaco played at the Parc des Princes, while Paris Saint-Germain has 14 trophies (record), the last in 2021, 2-0 in the last acts from Monaco to the Stade de France.

In their last direct Ligue 1 match on 16 October 2022, Paris Saint-Germain beat Olympique Marseille 1-0 at home thanks to Neymar’s goal in the 45+2 minute.
