
An Argentine court on Monday sentenced five young rugby players to life in prison for killing a man as they left a nightclub three years ago, following a highly publicized trial.
Three other participants in the fight, from a group of friends between the ages of 21 and 23, were sentenced to 15 years in prison for “secondary participation” in the killing of Fernando Baez Sosa, an 18-year-old student, by punching and kicking him on January 18, 2020 at the Villa Gesell resort , located approximately 400 km south of Buenos Aires.
A court in Dolores spent several weeks trying the case of eight young men charged with double aggravated murder, because they committed the crime in a group and with premeditated intent.
The drama sparked strong emotions in Argentina, leading to demonstrations in several cities, including Villa Hesel and Buenos Aires.
