Anette Kontaveit was ranked second in the WTA last summer, but the player from Estonia is not going through the best moment in her career and was defeated by Magda Lynette (45 WTA) in the second round of the Australian Open 2023.

Annette Kontaveit, defeated by Magda Lynette at the Australian Open

Kontaveit (16th seed), seeded 19th after her recent poor results, started the match well and won the first set 6-3, but made more and more errors and allowed her opponent to come back.

Magda did not refuse Anette’s gifts and won after an hour and 52 minutes of play with a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Know:

  • In the next round, Lynette will play Russian Kateryna Alexandrova (18 WTA, 19 seed), who defeated Taylor Townsend (135 WTA) in three sets with a score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
  • Kontaveit had a career-best Grand Slam finish at the Australian Open: the quarterfinals in 2020.

Australian Open 2023 will be held from January 16 to 29. The champions of the title were Ashley Barty (now retired from sports) and Rafael Nadal.
