The Polish Football Association has opened talks with former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to take over the coaching bench of the national team that lost to France in the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar.

Steven Gerrard, discussions with the Polish national team

After the Federation decided not to renew the contract of former coach Czeslaw Michniewicz, the Polish national team has been without a coach since the beginning of this year, and president Cezarij Kulesha has several interesting names on the list, Polish media reports.

In addition to the two Polish coaches, Marek Papshun and Jan Urban, the FPF is also targeting Roberto Martinez, Herve Renard, Volodymyr Petkovic, Paulo Bento and Nedad Bielica.

However, the closest is Steven Gerrard, an England international with 114 caps and Yanis Hagi’s former coach at Glasgow Rangers, with whom he won the Scottish title, as well as manager of Aston Villa.

Despite being released by the Birmingham club, the former midfielder was on a whopping £5million-a-year salary, which he continues to receive until 2024, which has become a stumbling block in negotiations with the Polish FA president.

But the opportunity to work with one of the greatest active footballers, Robert Lewandowski, pleases the Englishman, and the Federation seems ready to even find a sponsor to support some of the demands of the future coach.
