The wife of Mike Cavendish said that during the robbery in 2021, the British cyclist was dragged by the legs and threatened with a knife “Rambo-style”, according to the BBC.
Prosecutors said masked men broke into the family’s home in Ongar, Essex, on November 27, 2021. The two suspects, Romario Henry, 31, and Oludewa Okorosobo, 28, have pleaded not guilty to robbery at Chelmsford Crown Court.
Cavendish’s wife, Peta, gave evidence at the trial and described the incident as her “worst nightmare”.
The suspects got away with two Richard Mille watches, worth £400,000 and £300,000, as well as suitcases and phones.
Mark Cavendish’s wife told about “worst nightmare”
Peta Cavendish said she was lying in bed when she was awakened by a noise downstairs.
“As I was going down the stairs, I could hear men talking, but it was still dark,” she said, adding that she saw “hooded silhouettes of men” running “to the bottom of the stairs.”
She told how the suspects followed her into the bedroom, where they “dragged” her husband “by the legs and started beating him.”
“One of them put a big black knife to his throat and said: ‘Where are the watches?’ and “do you want me to stick a knife in you?”.
She agreed with prosecutor Edward Renvoise that it was a Rimbaud-style knife.
A Rambo knife is usually described as a survival knife with dozens of saw teeth, as seen in the Rambo franchise.
“They were very specific about the watch. I tried to explain to them that we were actually robbed a few years ago when everything was taken away.” – Peta Cavendish.
The biker’s wife said the men asked to see the safe, but it was empty and still couldn’t be opened because the batteries were dead.
She said her husband was “out for four days” at the time after a cycling accident that left him with three broken ribs and a ruptured left lung.
Peta Cavendish said they eventually took the £400,000 ‘Mark raced in’ watch, which had a blue strap and was on the windowsill. She said they also took her £300,000 Richard Mille watch from her bedside table.
They turned the bedroom “upside down”, she said, and when they left, Cavendish activated the alarm to alert a private security firm and the police.
Mark Cavendish testified how one man “held him” and another “pulled a knife and put it in my face”.
The cyclist told jurors he was a representative for Richard Mille watches and was sometimes loaned watches.
Asked about her stolen watch, Peta said it was “just one”, adding: “It was made for me.”
Mark noted that the two watches were “provided as part of the ambassador’s status.”
Ali Sesay, 28, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery at a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors said the fourth and fifth suspects, Joe Jobson and George Goddard, have not been found.
The process is expected to be completed by the end of this week, writes News.ro.
