Caroline Garcia and the fight against bulimia: “Food was an escape”

The world number four said she suffers from bulimia and tries to “fill the void” when things don’t go her way on the tennis court.

“All people are different. Some people stop eating, but for me it’s the opposite. I used to seek my refuge in food. You feel so empty, so sad that you feel the need to fill that void. It happened because of the pain of not being able to do what I wanted on the field, of not winning anymore, of physical pain.

The food calmed me down for a few minutes. We all know it doesn’t last long, but it was an escape route. When you’re alone, it’s harder to control the situation. In tennis, you spend a lot of time alone in your room. So it happened.

You begin to understand and realize that if this happens, it is not the end of the world. Since I spend more time on myself, it happens less often. And when it happens, I accept it better and don’t feel guilty.

Allowing myself a few regular treats helps me avoid excessive cravings. At one point I was too hard on myself. I am the kind of person who watches my weight by the gram. Now if I want pizza for two days, I go and get pizza” – Caroline Garcia for L’Equipe.

At the age of 29, Garcia defeated Nadia Podorska (196 WTA) and Petra Martic (38 WTA) at the United Forces Cup.
