The image with Messi and the cup made history as the most popular on Instagram, gaining more than 74 million likes, Clarin.com writes.

Paula and Manuel, two Argentine fans from La Plata, brought a replica of the trophy with them to the grand final at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

After the last penalty and the joy that erupted in the stands, they took the trophy and began to celebrate a great victory for Argentina. Seeing a relative of Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes, they handed him the cup to get his autograph.

Once on the field, the fake trophy circulated alongside the original, the two being almost identical, and from that point on, it was only a step before the replica ended up in the hands of captain Lionel Messi.

The two, who recognized their subject in photographs that later appeared online, eventually recorded a discussion between Di Maria and Messi, during which the former warned Leo that he had given away a fake trophy.
