Gabriela Ruse managed to get to the 1/8 finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Auckland, beating (not without emotions) our athlete Erin Rutliff (New Zealand – 855th place in the world ranking).
Based on the qualification, Gabi started the match well and the first set deservedly went back to her with a score of 6-2.
However, the continuation was not as Ruse wanted: she lost the second set (6-4), and the match against the 855th ranked player in the world went into a deciding set.
Gabriela again managed to rise to a higher level, broke away by 4:0, and it was a decisive set without unnecessary emotions.
However, the home team did not give up the fight, and from 4:0 the score “narrowed” to 5:4 in favor of the Russians (without the advantage of a break).
Fortunately, Gabi managed to finish the match with a white break (6-4), and the victory came after a match lasting two hours and 28 minutes.
Know:
- For a place in the quarters, Gabriela Ruse will have to fight with the winner of the match between Sia Wang (50 WTA and the fifth favorite) and Karolina Mukhova (151 WTA).
The ASB Classic (WTA Auckland) runs from January 2 to 8 on hard, is part of the WTA 250 category, offers a total of $259,303 in prize money, and is championed (as of 2020) by Serena Williams.
