Of particular interest is the opener in Group B between England, who disappointed last time out in the Nations League, and Iran, who are still looking for a first-ever World Cup round of 16 qualification (the group also includes the USA and Wales).

England, champions of the world in 1966, will be hoping to surpass the figures of the last two finals tournaments in which they played in the final (1-1 and 2-3 on penalties with Italy at Euro 2020) and the secondary final (0-2 with Belgium at the 2018 World Cup ).

The strength of the English is Harry Kane, the striker of Tottenham, the top scorer of the 2018 World Cup in Russia with six goals.

Gareth Southgate’s side are coming off a disastrous run in the Nations League where they recorded three draws and three defeats to finish bottom of their group, relegated to League B.

This after the Lions qualified for the World Cup in Qatar by winning a group that included Poland, Albania, Hungary, Andorra and San Marino.

Before the final tournament, the British did not even play a friendly match, the last one was a match with Germany on September 26 in the League of Nations with a score of 3:3.

Iran, under the leadership of Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, entered the 2022 World Cup without emotion from a group in which the main rivals were South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.

The Asians played five friendly games before arriving in Qatar, with two wins, a draw and a 0-2 defeat against Tunisia in their last match.

The most famous Iranian footballers are Mehdi Taremi (Porto), Alireza Jahanbakhsh (Feyenoord) and Sardar Azmoun (Bayerkusen), the latter on the verge of being expelled from the national team after criticizing the regime in Tehran.

England and Iran have never met before and will be rivals for the first time even at the World Cup.
