​The Romanian national team will meet with the Portuguese team in a two-legged playoff match of the 2023 Women’s World Handball Championship, according to Saturday’s draw. The first match “tricolor” will be played at home.

Romania was part of the first cost bin in the draw, while the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Iceland, Turkey, Ukraine, Portugal, Greece, Italy and Kosovo were in the second.

Despite the 12th place at the European Championship, the final stage of which will take place on Sunday, the Romanian national team took a place among 10 teams in the first round. This is due to the fact that the teams with the highest rating at the World Cup 2022 have already qualified for the final tournament of the World Cup 2023: the hosts Denmark, Sweden and Norway, the semi-finalists France and Montenegro, as well as the Netherlands, who were playing for 5-6 places.

The CM2023 play-off matches will take place on 7/8 April 2023 (first leg) and 11/12 April (second leg).

• The winners will qualify for the final tournament of the World Cup, which will be held from November 30 to December 17, 2023 in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

• Saturday’s draw, which followed the CE2022 final press conference, also premiered the next edition in 2024 (November 28 – December 15), which will take place in Hungary, Austria and Switzerland. 24 teams in the final tournament, compared to 16 currently.
