Malta national team not convinced

The national team remained uncertain in yesterday’s match against Malta. Our representative group drew 2-2 with Malta in Valletta and Gustavo Poyet gave a lot of new faces a chance, but that doesn’t justify poor performance for most of the match.

The national team controlled the situation in the first half, but possession of the ball was somewhat pointless, as it could not break through the defensive line of the hosts, who did not press high, but were waiting for our team in their own half. The decision finally came in the 39th minute when Bakasetas put Greece ahead with a very good shot.

Malta came out of their shell in the second half and equalized with De Gabriele in the 54th minute.

As if that wasn’t enough, in the 67th minute, referee Alain Dury erroneously awarded a penalty to Buchalakis and shortly thereafter, despite strong protests, Theuma gave the hosts the lead. But in the 67th minute, in exactly the same phase, the referee from Luxembourg missed and fixed the same violation of our team.

In the last minutes, Greece again closed Malta in the half of the field, and finally, in the 86th minute, they equalized with a very beautiful strike from Fudas from outside the penalty area. In fact, he almost signed a 90′ reversal, but Bonello, with a terrible interference from the summer, deprived him of a goal.

Despite the draw in the end, the national team showed problems both in finding solutions in a very closed defense, and with a return to the opponent’s quick counterattacks. The next tests are scheduled for Sunday against Hungary in Budapest.
