The World Cup gives statisticians an opportunity to provide interesting information. And one of them is related to the number of points scored by participating teams of previous world championships.

According to the current format, points are only awarded in the group stage, but the statistics awarded 3 points for every victory recorded at the World Cup, regardless of the stage of the competition, and 1 point for the results of the draw.

This interesting statistic was prepared by Sofa Score, which took into account the results recorded in all 21 World Cups from 1930 to the present day. Thus, the first place in this top was taken by Brazil, a country that was present at all editions of the World Cup and won the competition five times. Germany is in second place, and Italy, which did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup, is in third place.

The best teams with the most points in the history of World Cups:

  1. Brazil – 237 points (109 matches, 73 wins, 18 draws, 18 losses)
  2. Germany – 221 points (109 matches, 67 wins, 20 draws, 22 losses)
  3. Italy – 156 points (83 matches, 45 wins, 21 draws, 17 losses)
  4. Argentina – 144 points (81 matches, 43 wins, 15 draws, 23 losses)
  5. France – 115 points (66 matches, 34 wins, 13 draws, 19 losses)
  6. England – 108 points (68 games, 29 wins, 21 draws, 18 losses)
  7. Spain – 105 points (63 matches, 30 wins, 15 draws, 18 losses)
  8. Netherlands – 93 points (50 matches, 27 wins, 12 draws, 11 losses)
  9. Uruguay – 84 points (56 matches, 24 wins, 12 draws, 20 losses)
  10. Sweden – 70 points (51 matches, 19 wins, 13 draws, 19 losses)

Brazil are also favorites for the 2022 World Cup

Sofa Score’s top-ranked Brazil are also top favorites in Qatar, according to World Cup betting odds. 5.00 is the starting odds for the new title “Queen of the World” (it will be the 6th in history). This puts them ahead of their arch rivals Argentina who have a rating of 6.00. 2018 World Champions France – 7:00 and EURO 2020 finalists England – 9:00, facing Spain. Germany – at 11.00, Belgium – at 15.00, as well as the Netherlands and Portugal.

However, Brazil is going through a two-decade drought when it comes to World Cup appearances. The last trophy was won in 2002, when the competition was organized by South Korea and Japan. Since then, the team has reached the quarter-finals in 2006, 2010 and 2018, and in 2014, when they hosted the competition, they finished fourth.

On the other hand, Brazil is the most successful team in the history of World Cups with five trophies. It is also one of the few countries to have won the World Cup outside of its home continent, along with Argentina, Spain and Germany.

Romania has eight victories in the history of participation in the World Cup

Romania will not be present at the 2022 World Cup, having missed the qualification. Our country has not participated in the World Cup since 1998, when the team, which included Hagi and Popescu, was eliminated in the 1/8 finals by Croatia with a score of 1:0.

In total, Romania participated in seven World Cups, with the quarter-final in 1994 being our best result. Then we were just minutes away from the dream semi-final, and the run from the edition organized by the USA is considered the best in the history of the national team. By the way, then we won three, drew one and lost only one. It was also the edition in which I scored the most goals, ten.

In the first participation in 1930, Romania was eliminated in the group stage after defeating Peru and losing to Uruguay, the best team at the time. Romania had to wait for another success at the World Cup until 1970 (in 1934 and 1938 we were quickly relegated), in the confrontation with Czechoslovakia in Guadalajara the score was 2:1, our goals were scored by Nyagu and Dumitrace. But Romania was eliminated in the group stage, because we lost to England and Brazil.

A new World Cup presence had to wait until 1990, with Romania beating the USSR 2-0 in the first leg in Bari thanks to a brace from Marius Laketus. But then there was a defeat with Cameroon and a draw with Argentina, so in the round of 16 we were eliminated by Ireland on penalties. Qualifiers for the 1994 and 1998 tournaments followed, and Romania has been watching the World Cup on TV ever since.
