​Mircea Sandu spoke about Edi Iordenescu being appointed as a coach along political lines, and the Romanian Football Federation responded according to a statement from the man who led Romanian football for 24 years.

The former president of the FRF for more than two decades, Mircea Sandu, clarified that Edi Iordenescu was appointed as a selector along political lines and that it is very important that Angel Iordenescu is the father of the current coach of the first team.

On its official website, the FRF came up with a response to the one who hosted the forum at Casa Fotbalului for good conditions.

“Unfortunately, it is necessary to clarify once again the fact that Edward Iordenescu did not have a different contract than the one that was offered to other technicians with whom he negotiated in December 2021 and January 2022.

However, in order to inform the public correctly, we remind you that this same contract was also on the negotiating table with Mr. Ladislav Boloni. The fact that Iordanescu is still on the national team bench today is due to the fact that although we finished the Nations League group in last place, the last matches showed that there is hope and that the national team is on a good path.

Regardless of the coach who would train the tricolors in the League of Nations, the decision of the Technical Commission of the FRF would be the same.

The clause mentioned, where the contract is terminated if we finish 4th, was automatically activated after the Nations League games ended.

But after a meeting of the Technical Commission, it was determined that Edward Iordanescu was the right coach to qualify for EURO 2024 and it was decided that it was best to rely on consistency and this decision was confirmed by the FRF Executive Committee.

Thus, at the beginning of October, Edward Iordenescu signed a new contract for the period of the EURO qualifying tournament with an automatic extension in case of reaching the final tournament.

In addition, we remind you that before the conversation with Mr. Edward Jordanescu, there was a dialogue not only with Ladislav Boloni, but also with other technicians.

Given that none of them could lead the national team for various reasons, they went for a technician from the younger generation, and among them, Edward Iordenescu is the technician with the most experience and the best CV.

We also remind you that at the end of 2018, UEFA adopted a set of ten principles of good governance to stimulate the evolution of the quality of European football governance, principles that include the elimination of political interference as well as the autonomy of federal commissions.

At the age of 70, Mircea Sandu said, among other things, to Gazeta Sporturilor that Angel Iordanescu secured the appointment of Edi as a selector with the help of connections from the political world and the services.
