Simona Halep’s coach Patrick Muratoglu already has his sights set on Denmark’s Holger Rune, his current student.
With Simona absent due to nose surgery, Muratoglu quickly found his bearings, found a job and explained what his role would be in Holger Run’s play.
Holger Roon believes he can reach the top of the ATP hierarchy with Muratoglu
In an interview with Tennis Majors, Simona Halep’s current coach revealed plans for the player, who is ranked 27th in the ATP ranking.
“For me, success is getting information. During this time, I want to form a very clear idea of what we need to do to take Holger to the next level.
Roone is at a point in his career where he and his team are looking for additions to take them to the next level. The more it grows, the more accurate the work should be. His goals are very big. He always said he wanted to be number one. He can really get there,” said the Frenchman.
The first goal would be to break into the top 25, and another bold goal would be for Holger Roon to break into the top 10 tennis players in the world by mid-2023.
“I will not say that the semi-finals in Paris will be good (nor at Roland Garros 2023) because I never impose restrictions and he can win it,” Patrick Muratoglu also said.
“Do you think the team knows what they need more of right now? No! They have ideas, so they concluded that we should work together. One more thought is important.
Imagine the longevity of the relationship between Holger and Lars Christensen, who has been with him since childhood. When you’ve been with someone for so long, you don’t always see things the right way.
They’re looking for high-level experience to find the difference between #25 and #1.
Preparing a player while someone is already preparing him is something new for me, but it’s nice to try a new experience,” he added.
“Lars and Holger have an incredible relationship. Listen, trust him, it’s a very positive thing and we’ll keep it going. So far communication with Lars is perfect, he is very open, organized. His only goal is to bring out the best in Holger.
I wouldn’t change anything about Holger’s routine, I noticed a few aspects, but Lars knows him best, not me. I can share some thoughts with him, but you have to know the player very well before you change anything.
I need to see him in other poses, how he thinks, how he adapts. Any player of his age has room for improvement, 100%,” Patrick added.
Patrick Muratoglu compares Runa Holger to Carlos Alcaraz
Patrick Muratoglu sees Carlos Alcaraz as the perfect role model for his new pupil, who certainly has a lot to learn from the ATP leader.
“I see it as a challenge for Holger. He might think: this guy will be my competitor in the future. It’s a positive thing, in the sense that it’s extra motivation,” said Patrick Muratoglu, who confirmed that he is now with the Dane every day after Simona Halep underwent surgery.
“He can’t play now. He had a nose job and needs time to recover physically. It will take him some time to get to a good level because he hasn’t been training lately.
The ideal is to get down to business when she thinks she’s ready,” Patrick said about Simona.
“Meanwhile, I have this moment with Holger and we’ll see what comes out of this collaboration. I’m excited about what I’m doing, I give 100% with any player and we’ll see what happens in the future,” concluded the Frenchman, who also coaches Simona Halep.
