During the serious incidents that occurred during the Argentinian championship match against Boca Juniors, a supporter of the Gimnasia La Plata team was killed, according to the international press.
“I can confirm that one person died after suffering a cardiac arrest,” regional minister Sergio Berni said.
The hospital, where the victim was taken, said that he was a 57-year-old man.
The violence at the Juan Carmelo Zerillo stadium in La Plata started outside the arena.
Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse fans who tried to enter the already packed stadium.
“The incidents started outside and spread inside. About 10,000 people tried to get in near the stadium, some with tickets, some without.
Everyone could clearly see that the stadium was full,” explained Eduardo Aparicio, head of the agency for the prevention of violence in sports.
Aparicio said what happened will be investigated.
The match was stopped in the 9th minute, when the effect of tear gas, applied from outside, began to be felt in the arena.
“The air became impossible to breathe. The situation got out of control and there were no more security guarantees,” said referee Hernan Mastrangelo.
Several spectators rushed onto the field trying to escape the tear gas as the stadium gates were closed.
According to the local press, dozens of spectators injured by tear gas arrived at the hospital.
On the other hand, the operator of the sports station was injured by a rubber bullet, News.ro reports.
