The FRF announced on Tuesday that the Romanian national team will finish second or third in the draw for the 2024 European Football Championship qualifying tournament.

The event will take place on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at 1:00 PM (Romanian time) at the Festhalle in Frankfurt.

Under the conditions in which the sanction applied to the Russian national team was preserved, and the host Germany is officially qualified, there will be 53 representatives in the ballot box, which will be divided into 10 groups. There will be 7 groups of 5 and 3 groups of 6 people.

Ballots will be based on the League of Nations 2022-23 hierarchy. The 4 winners of the Nations League will be in a special bin* (and will be divided into groups of 5), the next 6 will be in the first bin, then the bottom teams from League A, the group winners from League B plus the best 2nd placed team in the League B will be taken in the second round, and so on

*If Germany wins the Nations League group, the special pot will consist of the other 3 winners and the first pot of 7 teams

Romania in the second or third round of the Euro 2024 preliminary draw

According to the results of the last two stages of the League of Nations, Romania may find itself in:

  • SECOND CITY: if he manages to win the group, which is still mathematically possible, if he beats Finland and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the latter by at least two goals, and if, at the same time, Montenegro draws in Zenica and then loses at home to Finland; if it is the second best team in League B.
  • THIRD URN: if he finishes the group anywhere else. With Germany, the host of the final tournament, and Russia, who were appointed to League B (2022/23) but subsequently kicked out, not participating in the previous round, Romania cannot qualify for the fourth round.

The preliminary tournament matches of EURO 2024 will take place between March and November 2023, and 20 qualifying matches will be determined. A further 3 representative teams will earn a place in the final tournament after the Nations League play-offs in March 2024.
