Hospitalized on Saturday before the Italian Grand Prix, Albon, 26, “underwent successful laparoscopic surgery” at the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, Williams announced in a statement.

But “after surgery, Alex suffered from unexpected postoperative anesthetic complications that led to respiratory failure, a known but unusual complication. He was re-intubated and transferred to the intensive care unit,” the message also states.

The British team said the pilot had no further complications: “He made excellent progress overnight (Saturday to Sunday) and was able to be taken off respiratory support on Sunday morning. There were no other complications.”

Albon, whose mother is Thai and whose father is British, is due to return home on Tuesday, ahead of his expected return to F1 at the end of the month at the Singapore Grand Prix (September 30 to October 2).

In Italy, Albon was replaced on Saturday and Sunday by Dutchman Nick de Vries, who finished in an honorable 9th place in his first Grand Prix, writes News.ro.
