PAOK Thessaloniki, one of Greece’s top teams, finished 2nd last season, 19 points behind champions Olympiakos.

The team of Rezvan Lucescu (53 years old) this summer lost the Croatian striker Antonio Colak, who was transferred to Glasgow Rangers, and in his place brought in the Spaniard Brandon, who last played in Malaga.

PAOK Thessaloniki started the season with a surprise exit from Europe, 0-2 away and 1-1 at home to Levski Sofia in the second preliminary round of the Conference League.

Instead, in the championship, the “Eagles” have won both matches so far, 1:0 with Panetolikos and 2:1 with Atromitos, played at home.

The patron of PAOK Thessaloniki is Ivan Savvidis, a Russian oligarch of Greek origin who was born in a Greek village in Georgia.

His fortune exploded in the 90s when he also got involved in politics. Forbes included him in the TOP-30 richest Russian oligarchs, suspecting close ties with Vladimir Putin.

He took charge of the team in 2012 and became famous around the world in 2018 when he took to the field with a weapon at the end of the match against AEK Athens.

Aris Thessaloniki finished last season in 3rd place, just two points behind PAOK Thessaloniki, and have Julio Velázquez, a 40-year-old Spaniard who started coaching at just 15 and was Segundo’s youngest manager at 30, on the bench (Villarreal B).

He also coached Betis Sevilla, Belenenses, Udinese and Alaves among others.

Romanian player Cristian Ganya, who moved to Panathinaikos of Athens this summer, also played for Aris for the last two years.

Aris Thessaloniki were eliminated from the Conference League in the third preliminary round, 0-2 away and 2-1 at home to Maccabi Tel Aviv, and in the championship they have three points after two legs, 3-0 with Levadiakos (a) and 1-3 with Panetholicos (d).

In the last 10 direct matches, Aris won four times, PAOK won three matches, three more meetings ended in a draw.

Aris have won their last two games with PAOK, once at home and once away, each time by 1-0.
