​David Popovici qualified for the 200m freestyle final at the World Junior Swimming Championships on Wednesday with a series best time in Lima.

David Popovici is the fastest in the 200m freestyle at the Junior Swimming Championships

Our athlete was the first in the eighth (last) series: 1:49.40. Overtaken by the Turk Batuhan Filiz on the last length of the pool, David did not want to miss the first position and pushed in the last meters.

Stefan Kozma took 6th place in the sixth heat (1.53.37) and failed to qualify in the last event.

The men’s 200m freestyle final is scheduled for Thursday at 02:17 (Romanian time).

The junior world record at the distance of 200 m freestyle belongs to David Popovich: 1:42.97, the time of the final of the European Championship in Rome.

Andra Gorecki, in the final of the 200 m butterfly at the Junior Swimming Championships

Also Wednesday, Andra Gorecki qualified for the 200-meter butterfly final after finishing second in the fourth heat (2:16.06, fifth heat).

The final act of the women’s 200m butterfly is scheduled for Thursday at 02:09 (Romanian time).

Romania, an extraordinary result at the Junior World Championship in Lima

Romania’s first medals at the World Championships in Lima were won by Vlad Stanka (silver in the 400-meter freestyle) and the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay (gold).

Also, Aissia Claudia Prisecariu (1:02.59 – the fourth time in the semi-finals) and Rebecca Amy Diaconescu (1:02.64 – the fifth performance) reached the final of the 100 m backstroke (the medal match will take place on Thursday, from 03:23).

Also on Wednesday, Bianca Costea qualified in the penultimate event of the women’s 100m freestyle, posting the fourth time of the series (the semifinals will be held on Thursday, from 02:58 and 03:03).
