CFR Cluj and Maribor meet on Thursday 25 August at 20:00 in the second leg of the UEFA Conference League play-offs, which will be broadcast live on Digi Sport 1 and Prima Sport 1.
Romanian champions CFR Cluj have the first chances to qualify, having returned from Slovenia without conceding goals (0:0) in the match of the tour with Maribor. It would be the fourth time in a row that a group from Gruja has qualified for the UEFA competition groups.
Qualifying in the groups, even if only in the UEFA Conference League, would earn the Transylvanian side €2.94 million, on top of the €750,000 they have already collected for the play-offs.
In addition, €500,000 is paid for each group win and €166,000 for a draw.
The team that wins the group gets €650,000 and the second team gets €325,000.
Thus, CFR Cluj can still pay off debts of more than 25 million euros, which threaten the club not only with new insolvency, but even with bankruptcy.
“Of course, it’s good that we made it to the playoffs and took the money. But the goal is clear, we have to get into the groups,” said Dan Petrescu, coach of the Transylvanian team.
CFR Cluj postponed their league match against Hermannstadt, while Maribor played domestically on Sunday, drawing 2-2 at home to Celje (9th place after 6 stages, only 4 points). In fact, the Slovenians did not win in eight official matches, of which they lost six.
Maribor changed its coach just two days before the first match of the “double” with the champion of Romania: Radovan Karanović, who had been preparing the team since September 2021, was dismissed, and Croatian Damir Krznar (50 years old) was appointed in his place, the former second coach of Zagreb “Dynamo”.
Slovenian champions Maribor qualified for the UEFA Conference League play-offs after being knocked out in the Champions League by Sheriff Tiraspol (0-0 at home and 0-1 away) and then knocked out of the Europa League by HIC Helsinki. (0-2 at home and 0-1 away).
