Camelia Potek, president of the Romanian Federation of Swimming and Modern Pentathlon (FRNPM), said on Tuesday at Henri Coanda Airport that David Popovici achieved the 100m freestyle record (46.86) that he had aimed to become the fastest swimmer in the world of all time in this competition.
“I could feel his racing at maximum intensity. So I wanted to see them live, they are worth it. We are happy that he achieved this world record. He achieved what he set out to do – he became the fastest swimmer in the world at the distance of 100 meters freestyle. This is extraordinary… and we should all be glad that the fastest swimmer of the queen of world swimming trained in Romania. The fact that there were so many Romanians in the stands in Rome was an extraordinary thing. The vibration I felt was extraordinary,” Potek said after returning from Rome, where the European Swimming Championships are being held, Agerpres quoted.
David Popovich wants to win all the titles on the line in 2022
“Tomorrow he has the 400m freestyle, which is new for David. Then two weeks later he has the World Junior Championships. We want him to arrive safely in Peru for the World Championships and become the first Romanian athlete, if not in the world, I don’t know yet, but become the first Romanian swimmer to win absolutely all titles in one year. As in tennis, there are Grand Slam tournaments. That is, four major championships, world championships among juniors and juniors, European championships among juniors and juniors,” added Potets.
The president claims that Popovici is “having fun in the water” and emphasized that he is not connected with the reaction in the international press caused by his results at the European Championship.
“David is not overwhelmed by what is happening to him, he is only focused on what he has to do. He didn’t have much access to the Internet, he didn’t read much. The main thing is that he has fun in the water, as he himself said. And in the end, we all enjoy its extraordinary results,” Potech said.
Romanian swimmer David Popovici won gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Rome. He set a new world record (46 s 86/100) in the 100 m and a new junior world and European record, as well as a competition record (1 min 42 s 97/100) in the 200 m.
