David Popovici set record after record at the European Swimming Championships in Rome and won gold in the 100m and 200m freestyle. Christoph Milak and Antonio Djakovic, who finished behind the Romanian in those tests, had nothing but praise for the athlete, who was only 17 years old.
David Popovich, the mad genius of freestyle
Multi-medalist Christoph Milak finished second in the 100m freestyle and called our athlete a “mad genius” of the style.
David Popovich created a new one world record at the distance of 100 m freestyle: 46.86.
“It was a brilliant race, it’s a joy to sail alongside David. He’s a fantastic swimmer, I think he’s as crazy a freestyle genius as I am in butterfly. It’s great that his name will be on the front page for many, many more years.” – Christoph Milaksilver medalist in the 100 m freestyle, according to worldrecordacademy.org.
The waves made by David Popovich became an obstacle for opponents
In the 200-meter freestyle, Antonio Djakovic finished 2’63 behind David and talked about how difficult it is to compete with the Romanian.
David Popovich became third fastest 200m freestyle swimmer in history: 1:42.97.
“I fought until the end, it was a huge race, especially towards the end. I set a personal record yesterday, so I’m a little tired. I couldn’t swim better today, but at least I got silver and I’m very happy about that.
I’m friends with David Popovich outside the pool, but in the water we fight each other. It was difficult for me to sail alongside him after he took the lead because his waves kept hitting my lane” – Antonio Djakovicsilver medalist in the 200-meter freestyle, according to swimswam.com.
David Popovichi will also perform in Rome at the distance of 400 m freestyle (races are scheduled for August 17).
