
Serena Williams managed to put an end to the 14-month wait: the owner of 23 Grand Slam titles, the American reached the second round of the “WTA 1000” tournament in Toronto.
On Monday, Serena defeated the Iberian Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (57 WTA, out of qualification), the score 6-3, 6-4. The match lasted two hours.

Serena’s last win (she turns 41 on September 26) came on June 4, 2021: 6-4, 6-4 against Danielle Collins in the third round of Roland Garros.
In the next round of the National Bank Open tournament, Serena will play the winner of the match between the Swiss Belinda Bencic (12 WTA, Olympic champion in Tokyo) and the Czech Teresa Martinsova (73 WTA).
Serena Williams won the Rogers Cup three times: 2001, 2011 and 2013 (after the final with Sorana Kirstea).
