Novak Djokovic has less and less chance of playing on the North American continent due to a sudden change in Covid-19 protocols in the US and Canada, Reuters reports. As such, the Wimbledon champion is unlikely to attend the 2022 US Open despite the support he has received online.
Djokovic, currently ranked No. 6 in the ATP rankings, is refusing a COVID-19 vaccine but is still on the roster for the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati, which precede the US Open (Aug. 29-Sept. 11 ), the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
As for the US Open, for players without a vaccination certificate, the organizers previously announced, in accordance with Grand Slam rules, that all eligible players enter the main draw according to their ranking 42 days before the first Monday of the tournament.
US Open organizers also said that unless there is a valid vaccination certificate for players, they will respect the US government’s position on travel to the country for unvaccinated citizens from outside the US.
Last week, Djokovic said he was preparing for the US Open, where he hopes he will be allowed even if he is unvaccinated.
Organizers of the three North American tournaments and members of Djokovic’s team did not respond to questions about Nole’s involvement on Tuesday.
Fans are trying to send Novak Djokovic to the US Open-2022
A petition in Djokovic’s favor has been widely supported and reached nearly 50,000 signatures on Tuesday, as fans want the top players to be able to compete at the US Open, where if successful the Serb would match Rafael Nadal’s record number of Grand Slam titles (22).
The post on Twitter mentions the situation of US President Joe Biden, who had a full vaccination schedule, but who tested positive for Covid-19 just three days after he came out of the isolation imposed for the first positive test on July 21.
“Biden, vaccinated four times, again tested positive for Covid-19. But the unvaccinated Djokovic, who has recovered from Covid-19, cannot play at the US Open. He appears to be too much of a risk for the US healthcare system,” one of the Twitter posts about the case of the Serbian player said.
The refusal to immunize Djokovic missed the chance to defend his title at the Australian Open earlier this year, and the Serb said at the time that he would rather not play in tournaments than get vaccinated.
