Sakellaropoulou: PtD message for World Environment Day

On the occasion of her world environment daywhich this year is dedicated to plastic pollution, the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, urges us to remove them, as far as possible, from our daily lives and invites us to “think of our seas as the womb of life.” As he points outlet’s instill an ethic of responsibility to future generations. Ensuring a sustainable environment is of existential importance to all of us.”

In particular, in her Facebook post, Ms. Sakellaropoulou states:

“We speak loudly about the environment, we face the consequences of climate change, we are looking for solutions and practices that will prevent further environmental degradation of natural and man-made landscapes. And yet our lands and seas are still considered by many to be dumping grounds for waste of all kinds. We destroy ecosystems and accumulate plastic on the seabed and beaches. Materials that do not decompose remain intact in the environment, injuring, suffocating or even killing marine animals, while microplastics, plastic fragments and fibers enter the food chain and pose a serious threat even to human health.

Tons of plastic are washed up on our beautiful shores. The entire Mediterranean, David Attenborough’s “first Eden”, the cradle of civilization and the center of a unique ecological heritage, is in danger of becoming a “plastic soup”. It’s not about aesthetics, it’s about survival. Already during this period, the European Union, within the framework of the European Green Deal, is reviewing its waste management legislation in order to move from a linear economy to a circular economy.

Today, on World Environment Day, this year dedicated to plastic pollution, let’s remove it as much as possible from our daily lives. Let’s think of our seas as wombs of life. And let’s instill an ethic of responsibility to future generations. Ensuring a sustainable environment is of existential importance to all of us.”
